Does Utah require quarterly estimated tax payments?
No. Utah doesn't require individual quarterly estimated payments. You can prepay voluntarily, but there are no mandatory installments. Utah has no during-year quarterly requirement. To avoid the prepayment (extension) penalty, your withholding plus any prepayments by the April 15 return due date must equal the lesser of 90% of current-year tax or 100% of prior-year tax. Falling short triggers a 2%/month penalty.
How do you avoid a Utah penalty without quarterly payments?
Prepay enough by the filing deadline: pay the smaller of 90% of your 2026 Utah tax or 100% of your 2025 tax. Withholding and any voluntary prepayments both count toward that safe harbor.
What federal estimated taxes do Utah freelancers still owe?
Every self-employed Utah filer still owes federal estimated taxes if they expect to owe $1,000 or more for 2026 after withholding. That includes the 15.3% self-employment tax (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your net profit, plus federal income tax. Federal payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, and you can pay through IRS Direct Pay.
What deductions lower your Utah estimated taxes?
Because estimated taxes are based on your net profit, every business write-off you claim lowers what you owe each quarter. Common deductions for 1099 workers, reported on Schedule C, include the home-office deduction, car mileage, phone and internet, software, and supplies. You can also deduct half of your self-employment tax, and the federal Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction can remove up to 20% of your qualified business income, which flows through to your Utah return in most states.
Keeper's 1099 tax calculator estimates your bill after deductions, and our write-off guides list the deductions for your line of work.

How to file quarterly taxes in Utah
In Utah, quarterly filing is really about your federal payments — the state doesn’t require estimated installments. Here’s the process, plus how to prepay Utah if you choose to.
- Confirm you need to pay. Federal estimated payments apply whenever income isn’t being withheld — 1099, freelance, or investment income. Self-employment income is taxable in Utah, but the state doesn’t require quarterly estimates — you settle up when you file, though a voluntary prepayment can reduce penalties or interest.
- Calculate your federal estimate. Use the Form 1040-ES worksheet (or tax software). Estimate your full-year income, add your federal income tax and self-employment tax, subtract anything already withheld from a paycheck, and split the rest across the year. The estimate at the top of this page gives you a starting number.
- Pay the IRS. Pay through IRS Direct Pay (or EFTPS) and choose the estimated tax / Form 1040-ES option. Select tax year 2026 and save the confirmation number. This money counts only toward your federal taxes.
- Prepay Utah if you want to (optional). To avoid a balance-due penalty or interest, send a voluntary Utah payment through Taxpayer Access Point using Form TC-546. Otherwise, pay your full Utah tax when you file.
- Repeat on each deadline. For 2026, federal estimated payments are due April 15, 2026, June 15, 2026, September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. In Utah, quarterly installments aren’t required, so you only have to hit the federal dates — a voluntary state prepayment is optional.
