Question
i RECEIVED A SETTLEMENT IN A MEDICAL CLASS ACTION SUIT. I am in Texas I received no 1099 of any sort , but got a settlement letter from the firm handling the case. Is the settlement taxable?
AI accountant’s answer:
It depends on the nature of the settlement. Generally, settlements from medical class action lawsuits may be classified into different categories, with some being taxable and others non-taxable. If the settlement compensates you for physical injuries or physical sickness, it is typically non-taxable. However, if the settlement is for emotional distress, lost wages, or punitive damages, it may be considered taxable income.
Since I don't have all the details about your specific case, I recommend reviewing the settlement letter and any accompanying documentation to understand the classification of your settlement amount. If you're not sure, it's a good idea to consult with a tax professional to ensure you report your settlement correctly on your tax return.
Comment from reviewer
Only punitive damages can be taxed, but not lost wages or emotional distress.
