Question
if you are a dependent but over the age of 18 do you have to do taxes?
AI accountant’s answer:
Whether you are a dependent or not, you might need to file a tax return depending on your income. If you're over 18 and can be claimed as a dependent, here are some general thresholds for the 2022 tax year that indicate whether you must file a tax return: 1. For single dependents under the age of 65, you need to file if your earned income is more than $12,950. 2. If you have unearned income (such as dividends or interest), you need to file if your unearned income is more than $1,100. 3. If you have both earned and unearned income, you should file if the combined total exceeds the larger of $1,100 or your earned income plus $350. It's important to note that these are general guidelines, and there may be other factors or special circumstances that require you to file a tax return.

It would likely be a good idea to add that whether the requirement to file a tax return exists or not, it is often a good idea for a dependent of this age to file a tax return because often they will get back a substantial portion of their federal tax withholdings via refund. Low tax brackets and other applicable deductions and credits often account for substantial refunds in these instances.
